Ted assumes that for Sherlock, there's a pretty big difference between being rude (no apology necessarily needed), and accidentally bringing up some recent and rather horrific trauma. Sherlock has said some pretty inappropriate things to Ted without remorse, but he was also very supportive and considerate when he came by the police station.
