He does very much like taking care of his lover, and he enjoys taking the lead to do so. But he doesn't feel like he needs rope or whatever to do that. He enjoyed it, but mainly because she enjoyed it. Which is enough, but it's not something he would pursue for himself.

Being freed from that responsibility might be what he enjoyed about being tied up in the first place. Especially now, when there's so much going on.
